Mindfulness for Coping with Cancer with Dr. Carlson

Dr. Linda Carlson, PhD, of the Department of Oncology at the Cumming School of Medicine, will introduce the concept of mindfulness and mindfulness meditation and provide a summary review of the scientific literature on the benefits of mindfulness for people with cancer. She will also describe the Mindfulness-Based Cancer Recovery program.

About the presenter:
Dr. Linda Carlson holds the Enbridge Research Chair in Psychosocial Oncology and is Full Professor in Psychosocial Oncology in the Department of Oncology, Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology.

She is the Director of Research and works as a Clinical Psychologist at the Department of Psychosocial Resources at Cancer Care Alberta. She is a fellow of the Mind and Life Institute and the Society of Behavioral Medicine.

Dr. Carlson’s research in Psychosocial Oncology, Integrative Oncology, and specifically in Mindfulness-Based Cancer Recovery has been published in many high-impact journals and book chapters. She published a patient manual in 2010 with Michael Speca titled Mindfulness-Based Cancer Recovery: A Step-by-Step MBSR Approach to Help You Cope with Treatment and Reclaim Your Life, in addition to a professional training manual in 2009 with Shauna Shapiro titled The Art and Science of Mindfulness: Integrating Mindfulness into Psychology and the Helping Professions. The third edition of this book was released in 2024. Dr. Carlson has published over 300 research papers and book chapters, holds several million dollars in grant funding, and is regularly invited to present her work at international conferences. She presented a TEDx talk titled Mindfulness for Personal and Collective Evolution in 2016.
