Currently, EU legislation around chemicals is based predominantly on assessments carried out on individual substances. Since humans and their environments are exposed to a wide variety of substances, there is increasing concern in the general public about the potential adverse effects of the interactions between those substances when present simultaneously in a mixture.
The Scientific Committee on Health and Environmental Risks proposed a decision tree for evaluating the risk of chemical mixtures.
