Anticancer 7-Day mindset Kickstart

Day 4: Your Mindset Toolbox, Part I: Gratitude Practice and Being in Nature

Welcome to Day 4 of the Anticancer Lifestyle Program’s 7-Day Mindset Kickstart! Today, we’re going to start filling your Mindset toolbox with some tools to help shift your mindset. See Margaret’s video to get started!

REVIEW: Gratitude Practice

One simple thing you can do to shift your mindset is gratitude practice. Research has shown that this practice reduces depression, improves sleep quality, reduces inflammation, and lowers the level of the stress hormone cortisol. This is a simple activity that you can do anytime, anywhere.

REFLECT

√ Write down three things for which you are grateful. They can be small things or things that are very important in your life. If you’d like a document to help you do this, please see our Gratitude Practice Worksheet.

REVIEW: Being in Nature

Simply spending time outdoors, in the fresh air and sunshine, in a natural setting such as a forest or by the ocean or a stream, is beginning to be recognized for its powerful health benefits. Early research shows that spending time in nature, allowing the five senses to be immersed in the natural world, away from technology and the noises and distractions of modern life, can have positive effects on the immune system and overall health.

If you live in a city, it’s still important to get outside. You can use the stimulation of city life as a way to practice being in the moment, by paying attention to all your senses.

Whether in nature or in the city, you can use the Five Senses Meditation to help you pay full attention to the here and now. You can do this meditation while walking or while sitting quietly.
