Almond & Cocoa Dipped Dates

Recipe by: Melanya Kushla, MS, RD, CHES at Taste & Thrive LLC
Yield: 8 servings
Serving Size: 2 date halves

Ingredients:

  • 8 whole dates, preferably Medjool (about ½ cup)
  • ⅓ cup sliced almonds (or other nut of choice), roasted
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup coconut oil
  • 2 teaspoons honey (or maple syrup for a vegan option)
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt

Utensils:

  • Small cutting board
  • Paring knife
  • 2 small glass bowls
  • Spoon
  • Serving platter

Directions:

  1. Prepare the Dates
    • Using a paring knife, carefully slice each date in half lengthwise. If the dates are not pre-pitted, remove the pit.
    • Gently press the halves back together and roll them slightly to form a cylindrical shape. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the Chocolate Coating
    • In a small glass bowl, combine cocoa powder, coconut oil, and honey (or maple syrup).
    • Microwave for 30 seconds to melt the coconut oil. Stir until smooth.
  3. Prepare the Almond Coating
    • In another small bowl, gently crush the roasted almonds using clean hands or the back of a spoon.
  4. Dip and Decorate
    • Take each rolled date half and dip it into the melted chocolate, covering one side.
    • While the chocolate is still warm, roll the date in the crushed almonds.
  5. Add Finishing Touches
    • Arrange the dipped dates on a serving platter. Sprinkle with cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt.
  6. Chill and Serve
    • Refrigerate for about 20 minutes, allowing the chocolate to set. Enjoy!

Notes:

  • Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
  • Customize by using different nuts, seeds, or coconut flakes.
  • For a vegan version, substitute honey with maple syrup.

Why Medjool Dates?

Medjool dates are prized for their soft texture and rich, caramel-like flavor, making them ideal for fresh recipes like this one.
