Exposure to Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) from Beverage Packaging

Abstract

This study investigated the influence of beverage packaging materials on the presence of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in plastic, glass, carton, aluminium, and tin canned non-alcoholic beverages. Results showed that 63 EDCs including perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), bisphenolsparabens, benzophenone-type UV-filters, biocides, nitrophenols, and alkylphenols, were detected in 144/162 screened products.

Highlights

  • At least one EDC was detected in 144/162 non-alcoholic beverage products.
  • PFAS, bisphenols, parabens and/or UV-filters were found in at least one product.
  • Structural isomers of BPA were identified in 19 canned beverage samples.
  • Canned beverages have higher levels of BPA than plastic or glass.
  • BPA levels exceed the newly updated acceptable daily intake for populations.
