This study by Koutros et al, published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, looked at the impact of two toxic chemicals, organochlorine (OC) insecticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), on the incidence of metastatic prostate cancer. These chemicals are known to have hormonal effects in the human body, so the impact of exposure to these compounds and risk of hormonal cancers, such as prostate cancer, is a concern.
The researchers found that metastatic prostate cancer was two times as likely among men with serum (blood) concentrations of oxychlordane (an OC insecticide) in the highest quartile compared with those in the lowest quartile.
